A modest composer, skilled violinist, noted whistler, and all around Renaissance Man of track-layering - Andrew Bird is perhaps one of the most relevant artists of our time. A darling among college students on their way to an M.S. degree, Bird infuses his music with a fascinating marriage of science and morality. But he is loved by everyone, and for good reason. He approaches age-old questions about life, death, love and loss - and even manages to interest you with more obscure issues like head-ticking, class conformity, and dark matter - all the while wrapping his songs up with clarity and striking philosophical big-picture points. Though no repertoire of an artist is ever bound to just one emotion, Bird manages to span the song spectrum like no other. His range is commendable, and he hammers and shapes words with the might of Hephaestus. He doesn’t forget to have fun, either, something key in all things artistic.
I thought I would share the song Scythian Empire off his album Armchair Apocrypha. It’s a sprawling and epic song off of a beautiful album. And, as a history major, by all rights I am dutifully obliged to choose this song.
Advice for listening: Let this song roll over you like a sunset. You’ll see what I mean.
And enjoy. :)
