This song made me stop just about everything I was doing. It’s gritty, beat-driven and hallucinogenic. It is also infused with oriental mysticism, and the intro lyrics make you feel like you’ve been lifted off the ground and suspended in air for the remainder of the song. I traveled to Viet Nam for a semester, and I can’t help but associate the background hazy twang that starts the song with instruments like the Dan Bau. Google it. It’s a monochord instrument that will probably make you laugh at first, given the right YouTube video. The song is called Smokey Taboo, and this sister-duo, formed in Paris but born in the States, are as avant-garde as one band can get without trespassing into self-indulgent and joyless territory.
Their album, Grey Oceans, will be releasing in May of this year, but is leakier than a cracked dam. If you like the song, there are many ways to pick it up before next month. Then again, if you like the song a lot, then support them and buy it anyway. :)
Cheers,
Joe
